THE NUMBER IS ON OUR SIDE
Fresh off a pair of victories over nationally ranked St. Michael's and Stonehill, the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey now has a national ranking on its side. Now, the Owls will be put to the test with three games in five days this week. Southern Connecticut travels to Assumption on Tuesday night before hosting Bentley on Thursday night at 7 p.m. and No. 3 nationally ranked UMass-Lowell on Saturday at 1 p.m.
MARTIN NAMED NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
After leading the Owls with seven points (three goals, one assist) in two games last week, senior captain
Whitney Martin was selected as the National Player of the Week by www.womensfieldhockey.com. Martin scored once in the win over Stonehill and followed that up with a five-point day (two goals, one assist) in the victory over St. Michael's.
OWLS WELL-RECOGNIZED BY NORTHEAST-10
The Northeast-10 Conference also took notice of the Owls' strong play last week. Sophomore goalie
Lauren Zarrella was selected as the Goalie of the Week, while Martin,
Grace Martha and #Sara Winterbottom were all named to the weekly honor roll.
MARTHA HAS A CAREER DAY
Senior captain
Grace Martha broke out for a career-high six points (two goals, two assists) in the win over St. Michael's. She figured in on all four Owls' goals in the contest. Martha set new personal career-highs in goals and points in the game.
THE SAME GOES FOR ZARRELLA
Sophomore
Lauren Zarrella set a new career-high with 16 saves in the win over St. Michael's. Zarrella easily eclipsed her old personal mark of 10 saves, set last year against Bryant.
FINDING THE BACK OF THE NET
Offense hasn't been an issue for the Owls in the early going. The team has scored at least two goals in each of its first six games, including a season-high five goal output against St. Anselm on Sept. 6.
WINTERBOTTOM PROVING A NICE ADDITION
Sophomore
Sara Winterbottom has been a steady contributor to the Owls' offensive cause in the early going this year. To date, she is tied for the team lead in goals with five and is second with 11 points. Winterbottom also scored two goals, including the game-winner off a penalty corner with no time remaining in regulation, in the victory over Stonehill.

Jennifer Sousa (one goal) each tallied their first points on the year in the game against St. Anselm.
Brittany Barra also tallied her first points in the win over Franklin Pierce.

Sara Winterbottom scored her first goal as an Owl in the game against Shippensburg.

SCSU will have some veteran experience this year with 12 returning players from last year's team.

The Owls were ranked sixth in this year's Northeast-10 Preseason Coaches' Poll.

Whitney Martin, along with sophomore Ann Berry, will captain the Owls this fall.
MOVING FORWARD
The Owls made a three-win improvement over their 2006 victory total in 2007. In addition, the club was also in the hunt for a Northeast-10 Tournament berth up until the final day of the regular season.
THE NUMBERS GAME
The Owls played 10 nationally ranked opponents during the course of the 2007 season - exactly half of the club's 20 game schedule. SCSU was 0-10 against nationally ranked teams in 2007 and 8-2 against teams that were not nationally ranked.
OWLS WELL-RECOGNIZED
Several individuals were recognized for their play during the 2007 season. Defender
Kate Gedney earned All-America, All-ECAC and All-Northeast-10 honors, while Gedney and classmate
Angela Cafarelli were both tabbed to play in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association North/South Senior All-Star Game. Junior
Whitney Martin was selected for All-Northeast-10 laurels. The Owls were also well-recognized for their achievements in the classroom. As a team, the program earned National Academic Squad honors from the NFHCA. Individually, eight student-athletes were also selected for their academic accomplishments.
OFFENSE PICKED UP THE PACE
SCSU averaged 2.2 goals per game over the last 14 outings (31 goals) of the year. The Owls scored only five goals in the first six games of the season.
MARTIN WAS ON A ROLL
Junior
Whitney Martin recorded 13 goals over the final 14 games of the year. She recorded three multiple-goal games on the year and posted a five-point effort (two goals, one assist) in the win over St. Michael's on Sept. 22. She ranked third in the Northeast-10 in both goals and points in 2007.
HEAD COACH KELLEY FRASSINELLI
A former All-American player at SCSU,
Kelley Frassinelli is in her 14th season as head coach of the Owls' field hockey squad. She has taken the Owls program to new heights during her first 13 years at the helm of her alma mater, highlighted by a NCAA Tournament appearance in 2004.

The Owls return to action on Sept. 24 for a road game against AIC.
