WALTHAM, Mass. - Senior tailback Jarom Freeman (Peekskill, N.Y.) rushed for 115 yards on 17 carries and scored a touchdown, but the Southern Connecticut State University football team lost to Bentley on Friday night in a Northeast-10 Conference contest, 17-14.
The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for the Owls and drops them to 4-3, 4-1 in NE-10 play. Bentley moved to 6-1, 4-1. It was also the first loss for SCSU on or after Oct. 1 since the 2004 season.
Southern Connecticut struck first late in the first quarter with a 12 play, 68 yard drive. The series culminated when John Wiechman (Buxton, Maine) plunged in from one yard out. Christopher Hazelton (Bristol, Conn.) connected on the PAT to make it 7-0.
Bentley quickly struck with two scores in just 18 seconds early in the second quarter. John Malone hauled in a three yard touchdown reception to make it 7-7 just 1:52 into the frame. Then, after a SCSU fumble on the ensuing kickoff, Bentley struck for another score to go up 14-7.
The Owls responded later in the second quarter with a 15 play, 82-yard drive to even the score. Freeman finished the drive with a one yard run that evened the score after Hazelton's successful PAT.
Both teams had opportunities to go in front, but turnovers plagued both squads into the fourth quarter. Bentley scored the eventual winning points with an 18-yard field goal from Tyler McNamara with 10:16 left in regulation to provide the margin of victory.
Southern Connecticut returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 17 when it takes on Stonehill at the Homecoming contest at Jess Dow Field.
