Baseball Grabs First Win of 2009, Defeating Dominican 11-4

PETERSBURG, Va. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team registered their first victory of the 2009 season as they easily dismantled Dominican by the score of 11-4. Junior Ed Bethke (Branford, Conn.) got the win for the Owls in a terrific starting effort allowing one run on one hit in four and two-thirds innings pitched. Freshman Ryan Geffert (Plymouth, Pa.) led the team offensively as he went 3-for-5 with an RBI.

Dominican took their first and only lead of the game early on as they scored in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly. The Owls retaliated in the bottom half of the inning as senior tri-captain Kevin Bowerman (West Haven, Conn.) hit a single to second, driving in freshman Sam Greenberg (Guilford, Conn.).

Bethke settled down in the second by striking out the first two batters and forcing the third to pop out.

Sophomore Nick DeProspo (Worcester, Mass.) led off the bottom of the second with a single to right field. The Owls would score three runs in the inning as a result of mistakes in the field. Dominican had a total of nine errors throughout the nine inning game.

Up 4-1 after two innings, the Owls would continue to increase their lead. They scored at least one run in every inning except the bottom of the fifth as they totaled 11 runs on 14 hits. Dominican was shut down to only five hits and four runs.

Greenberg and senior tri-captain Karl Derbacher (Northford, Conn.) scored three runs each in a total of ten plate appearances. Bowerman had two RBI on 2-for-4 hitting and sophomore Andrew Babb (Hopkinton, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI.

Southern is now 1-3 overall. Dominican fell to 0-1 with the loss.

The Owls return to the field tomorrow for a doubleheader against C.W. Post. The first game is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. in Petersburg, Va.
