LANTANA, Fla. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team completed a two game sweep of its doubleheader early Saturday afternoon. The Owls defeated the College of Saint Rose 9-7 and No. 24 Caldwell 1-0 in Florida. With the wins, Southern surpassed the .500 mark, improving to 5-4 on the season.
In the first matchup against Saint Rose, Southern jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first. Both teams exchanged runs throughout the game but Southern came away at the end with a 9-7 win.
Senior captains
Kevin Bowerman (West Haven, Conn.) and
Karl Derbacher (Northford, Conn.) led the team offensively with a combined four hits and four RBI. Derbacher's two hits consisted of a double and triple.
The next contest was a complete opposite as neither team could get a run. The game featured a pitching duel between
Ed Bethke (Branford, Conn.) and Buddy Riggs as they both went a complete game.
It was scoreless until the bottom of the ninth as
Ryan Geffert (Plymouth, Pa.) hit a home run in left center to give the Owls a 1-0 victory.
Freshmen
Sam Greenberg (Guilford, Conn.) and Geffert both tallied two hits in the win and Bethke pitched a scoreless nine innings, allowing only five hits, with seven strikeouts and zero walks.
The Owls return to action on Monday, March 16 as they host C.W. Post for their home opener. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
