CONFERENCE PLAY BEGINS
The Southern Connecticut State University softball team completed its road trip to Florida last week with four victories in Fort Myers. The team swept Molloy (8-6, 4-0) and Bridgeport (6-1, 7-2) on Thursday and Friday, improving to 8-2 on the season. The Owls will play eight games in a span of four days this week. The action kicks off in Garden City, N.Y. for a twinbill against Adelphi University on March 25. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. The Owls will then return home for a doubleheader against No. 10 C.W. Post on the ensuing day. Game one will begin promptly at 2:30 p.m. After a day off, the team will open Northeast-10 Conference action with two doubleheaders this week. Southern will play host to St. Anselm and St. Michael's on March 28-29. Game one of both doubleheaders will begin at 1 p.m.
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
The Adelphi Panthers enter their clash with the Owls at 7-3. The Panthers are in the midst of a four-game winning streak. Junior outfielder Samantha Johnston leads the Adelphi offense with a .424 average (14-for-33). Sophomore Leighann Bell has been the most consistent starter for the Panthers as she has posted two wins along with a 1.04 earned run average.
SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
The C.W. Post Pioneers currently sport a record of 6-6. In their last outing, the squad fell short to No. 17 Wayne State University by the final score of 6-5. Melissa Medina is the team's most consistent hitter with a .412 batting average (14-for-34). Christina Berardi leads the Panthers' rotation with a 4-2 record and a 1.10 earned run average.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS
St. Anselm recently finished up a 16-game road trip to Florida over the past two weeks. The team is currently 8-8, however are in the middle of a four-game losing skid. The Owls will look to take advantage in their first conference match-up of the 2009 campaign.
SCOUTING THE PURPLE KNIGHTS
St. Michael's also traveled to the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. over the past two weeks. The team closed out the trip with a record of 4-6, however won four of their last five games.
START TO FINISH
Freshman
Brittany Hill threw a complete game shutout on Friday afternoon against No. 17 Wayne State in Clermont, Fla. She allowed just one run on five hits and struck out three for her first career win. Hill had tremendous control as the first-year pitcher did not walk one batter in the game. In her second career start on March 15, Hill collected her second career victory. She threw a complete game, allowed six hit, two earned runs and struck out three in the contest.
DIALING LONG-DISTANCE
Megan Caporossi and
Kerry Iacomini each went deep in the first week of action for the Owls. Caporossi belted a game-winning two-run home run in the top of the six when the Owls were trailing 1-0. The towering shot proved to be the difference as the Owls stunned No. 17 Wayne State. Iacomini also went deep last week against Dominican College on Saturday.
IN THE 2008 CAMPAIGN
The Owls finished the 2008 season with a record of 25-26. They wrapped up their Northeast-10 Conference schedule in the third spot with an 18-12 record in conference play. In their last game, the team took an ill fortuned 3-2 loss to Bryant in extra innings in the second round of the Northeast-10 Tournament.
IN THE NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE
The Southern Connecticut State University's softball team has cracked the top five in the 2009 Northeast-10 Conference Softball Preseason Poll. The Owls received one first place vote and 170 total points and control the No. 4 seed heading into the 2009 campaign.
STRONG VETERAN PRESENCE
The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team will return 10 players from last year's team. Furthermore, among the 10 student-athletes, six started all 51 games for the Owls.
LEADING THE WAY
Coach Barbaro and the Southern softball program have named three returning starters to serve as team captains for the 2009 season. Seniors
Monica Savarese,
Brittany Gandley and
Christina Wolf will lead the way for the Owls this coming season.
2008 ALL-CONFERENCE PERFORMERS
In 2008 two members of the softball team earned Northeast-10 Conference accolades. Returning junior third baseman,
Megan Caporossi, and Jessica Dempsey were selected to the NE-10 third team. Caporossi led the way last season, starting in all 51 games for the Owls, hitting .349 with 33 RBI and 36 runs scored. She finished second in the league with nine home runs and forth in the league with an astounding .614 slugging percentage.
WELCOME ABOARD
The Owls will bring seven new players to this year's team. Coach Barbaro has added three potential outfielders, three pitchers and another infielder to assist the 10 returning athletes from last year's squad.

Head Coach
Lisa Barbaro returns for her fifth year in the dugout. In her Southern Connecticut career, Barbaro has posted a record of 102-83-5, including a 67-44-3 mark in Northeast-10 Conference games.
ON DECK
On deck for the Owls, the team will travel to Saint Rose on March 31 in Albany, N.Y. First pitch of this doubleheader is set for 5 p.m.
