SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – On Saturday afternoon, the Southern Connecticut State University baseball team totaled 21 runs on 30 hits as they swept AIC in a doubleheader. The Owls won by the scores of 11-2 and 10-3 as they surpassed the .500 mark in the conference with a 10-8 record and an overall mark of 15-17. AIC is now 4-14 in the NE-10 and 6-24 overall.

The bats were hot right from the start. In game one, Ryan Geffert (Plymouth, Pa.) led off the top of the second with a single to right field. Two batters later, Geffert would cross home plate for the first run of the game as Eric Schlitter (Guilford, Conn) singled to left field on a 3-2 count. Nick Delzio (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) would add two more to the scoreboard with a single as Southern took a 3-0 lead after two.

The Owls recorded seven runs in the seventh and eighth to put the game far out-of-reach. Kevin Bowerman (West Haven, Conn.) was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate. Karl Derbacher (Northford, Conn.) and Geffert registered two and three RBI respectively. Ryan Yerina (Trumbull, Conn.) went the distance and allowed just two runs, one earned, and struck out eight to earn his third win of the season.

Southern continued to unload on the Yellow Jackets as they totaled 10 more runs in game two. They piled on four runs in the top of the first then one more in the second to take an early 5-1 lead and would never look back, defeating AIC 10-3.

Greenberg went 3-for-5 from the plate and scored three runs. Bowerman tallied two RBI on two hits and Derbacher added three more RBI to total five on the day. Deprospo went 3-for-3 with three RBI and Chris Zbin (Colchester, Conn.) recorded the win in five innings, allowing one run (unearned) and striking out seven.

The Owls return to the field tomorrow as they host AIC for a 1 p.m. contest at The Ballpark at SCSU.
