NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team continued to swing the bats well on Sunday against AIC as they completed the sweep by a score of 15-4. The Owls outhit the Yellow Jackets 13 to 7 as they grabbed their fourth consecutive win.
Justin Cox (Newburgh, N.Y.) started on the mound and received more than enough run support to record his third win of the season.
The Owls offense was a repeat of yesterday's performance as they jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after one. With runners on first and second,
Andrew Babb (Hopkinton, Mass.) hit a two RBI single to left field to get the Owls on the board.
Nick DeProspo (Worchester, Mass.) added two more as he tripled to left center.
In the bottom of the 4th, Southern padded the lead with six more runs.
Karl Derbacher (Northford, Conn.) had a base clearing triple to put the Owls on top 9-1. Three batters later,
Eric Schlitter (Guilford, Conn.) drove in two more with a single to right center field.
The runs kept on coming as the Owls delivered 13 hits to complete the sweep over AIC. Cox recorded the win as he pitched six innings, allowing one run on only two hits.
Offensively, the Owls were hot right from the start. Schlitter went 2-for-3 from the plate with a team-high four RBI. DeProspo registered two triples, two runs scored and two RBI and Babb and Derbacher recorded two and three RBI respectively to highlight the Owls top performers on the day.
With the win, Southern improved to 16-17 overall and 11-8 in the conference while AIC dropped to 4-15 in the NE-10 and 6-25 overall.
The Owls return to action tomorrow for a make-up game at The Ballpark at SCSU against Felician. Game time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
