NEW HAVEN, Conn. – After a beautiful rendition of the national anthem performed by the Southern Connecticut State University softball team, the Owls proceeded to take two games from Bentley on Saturday afternoon at Pelz Field. Southern defeated the Falcons in walk-off fashion in game one by the final score of 1-0 and cruised in game two 9-1. With the sweep, the Owls improved to 29-11, 18-8 in Northeast-10 competition.

Kerry Iacomini (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) was tremendous in game one of the doubleheader. She tossed a complete game shutout, allowed just one hit and struck out a season-high eight batters. Iacomini collected her ninth win of the season and lowered her ERA to a microscopic 1.90.

Senior Brittany Gandley (Holbrook, N.Y.) collected the game-winning hit for the Owls in the bottom of the seventh inning. Alyssa Pagano (Monroe, Conn.) led off the inning with a basehit up the middle. Christina Wolf (Newtown, Conn.) reached on an error by the rightfielder, advancing Pagano into scoring position. Gandley ripped a game winning single down the leftfield line, driving in Pagano for the game-winner.

Conversely to game one, game two featured a quick start from the visiting Falcons. Bentley capitalized on an error from the Owls defense leading to a 1-0 advantage in the top half of the first.

Despite their early deficit, the Owls battled back with the tying run in the bottom of the second. Wolf laced a double to rightfield to lead off the inning. She then advanced to third on a pass ball and attentively stole home on a wild pitch, knotting the game up at one apiece.

In the bottom half of the fourth inning, Southern's offense came back to life. Iacomini singled up the middle and Pagano reached on an error by the shortstop. Gandley stepped into the batters box with one out and blasted a three-run homerun to leftfield, giving the Owls a 4-1 advantage. The Owls continued to pour it on as a Monica Savarese (Orange, Conn.) single and a Julianne Flood (Poughquag, N.Y.) walk, set the table once again. Khristle Lee (Aztec, N.M.) and Megan Caporossi (Northford, Conn.) came through with back-to-back RBI singles, extending the lead to 6-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, Caporossi and Iacomini provided more insurance for Brittany Hill (Durham, Conn.) Caporossi punched a two-run triple to right centerfield and Iacomini brought the mercy rule into effect with an RBI single, closing out a 9-1 victory.

Hill was terrific in the circle for the Owls. She pitched a complete game, allowed one run on four hits for her seventh win of the season. With the stellar outing, Hill lowered her ERA to 2.40 on the season.

Southern is back in action tomorrow, April 26 with a doubleheader against Merrimack College at Pelz Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
