NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team's 10-game win streak came to an end on Tuesday afternoon as the Owls fell short to Bentley, 9-8. Despite the Owl's late rally, the four-run deficit was too much to overcome.
Karl Derbacher (Northford, Conn.) and
Ryan Geffert (Plymouth, Pa.) led the team offensively in the loss with three RBI each.
Southern was the first to score for the 28th time this season.
Sam Greenberg (Guilford, Conn.) led off with a single to left field and would later score on a RBI single by Derbacher. The Owls weren't done yet as Geffert hit his 15th double of the season to bring in Derbacher and take an early 2-0 lead after one.
The Owls held their lead until the bottom of the third as the Falcons drove in four runs on five hits.
In the top of the fifth inning,
Rich McHugh (Pembroke, Mass.) hit his first career home run as he cut the margin to one. However, Bentley retaliated with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and two more in the sixth.
Trailing 9-5 in the ninth, the Owls wouldn't go down easily. Greenberg led off with another single and would later advance to third on a double to left field by
Kevin Bowerman (West Haven, Conn.). Derbacher would then single to drive in both runners for his second and third RBI of the day. The Owls would add one more on an RBI by
Andrew Babb (Hopkinton, Mass.) but it wasn't enough to keep their win streak going.
Geffert led the Owls with two doubles and four hits in five at-bats to extend his hit streak to seven games. Six Owls had at least two hits in the game as Southern outhit their opponent 15 to 12.
The Owls are now 22-18 overall and 17-9 in the conference. Bentley improved to 24-21 and 15-11 in the NE-10.
Southern returns to the field on Thursday to host Bentley on “Senior Day” at 3:30 p.m.
