Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. – In a Northeast-10 offensive showdown, the Southern Connecticut State University baseball team fell short to Assumption, 12-11. Despite out hitting its opponent (18 to 15), the Owls late inning rally wasn't enough to recover from their early deficit. Ryan Geffert (Plymouth, Pa.) recorded seven RBI's in the loss as he went 4-for-5 with two doubles and a grand slam.

Southern is now 10-14 overall and 5-4 in the conference. The Greyhounds post an overall mark of 15-11 and 8-4 in the NE-10.

The Owls jumped out early in the top of the first. Kevin Bowerman (West Haven, Conn.) led off with a single to center field. The next two batters walked to bring Geffert to the plate with bases loaded. With a two-one count, Geffert sent it deep to right field for his first career grand slam.

Despite an early 4-0 lead, Assumption responded with some offense of its own and tied the game after one.

During the next two innings, the Owls were held scoreless as the Greyhounds took advantage by scoring three runs in the second and four in the third to take a commanding 11-4 lead.

Southern would rally in the final six innings. They cut the deficit to two after the eighth as Jordan Hockenberry (Glastonbury, Conn.) had an RBI single and #A.J. Rouleau# (Westborough, Mass.) singled down the left field line to bring in Geffert. The Owls would add another run in the ninth but fell a run short as they were defeated at Assumption, 12-11.

Karl Derbacher (Northford, Conn.) and Bowerman went 3-for-5 and 3-for-6 respectively as they crossed home plate a total of seven times. Andrew Babb (Hopkinton, Mass.) added two RBI with a double and Eric Schlitter (Guilford, Conn.) went 4-for-5 from the plate.

The Owls return to Northeast-10 action tomorrow, April, 8 as they travel to Rindge, N.H. for a 3 p.m. contest against Franklin Pierce.
