Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader to Open 2010 Season

MOREHEAD CITY, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team swept its doubleheader on Sunday to begin the 2010 season. The Owls handled UMass Lowell in their first game of the day, claiming a commanding 14-1 victory. They followed that performance with a 4-0 shutout over East Stroudsburg. Southern's starting pitchers went 15 innings on the day without allowing a run, striking out 14 batters and walking four. The squad also did not commit an error in 18 total innings.

In the first game against UMass Lowell, starting pitcher Chris Zbin (Colchester, Conn.) threw seven scoreless innings, surrendering just two hits and striking out six. Kevin Pettine (Somerset, Mass.) struck out two in one inning of relief.

Offensively, the Owls connected on 16 hits. Kyle Rosadino (Berwyn, Pa.) and Bryan Dorsey (Cheshire, Conn.) totaled three each going 3-for-5 and 3-for-4 respectively. Rosadino hit a triple and drove in a run and Dorsey collected two RBI and two doubles. Nick DeProspo (Worcester, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double as the Owls drove in 14 total runs.

Steve Simon (Middlefield, Conn.) went eight scoreless innings in his first appearance as an Owl against East Stroudsburg. He struck out eight, allowed three hits and walked just one batter. Pettine struck out two more batters in one inning of relief once again.

Sam Greenberg (Guilford, Conn.) stole two bases and hit a double. Ryan Geffert (Plymouth, Pa.) collected two more hits with a RBI and a run scored and DeProspo hit his second double of the day as the Owls completed the sweep, 4-0.

The Owls return to the field tomorrow for a 10 a.m. game against East Stroudsburg.
