NEW HAVEN, Conn. – In its first Northeast-10 Conference game this season, the Southern Connecticut State University baseball team came away victorious, defeating Pace University by the score of 6-3.
Chris Zbin (Colchester, Conn.) earned his fourth win of the season as he went six innings, allowing just two runs on four hits and striking out seven at The Ballpark at SCSU on Wednesday. The Owls are now 7-4-1 and 1-0 in conference play. Pace falls to 3-7 overall and 0-1 in the NE-10 with the loss.
Southern jumped on the board first with a four-run third inning.
Jordan Hockenberry (Glastonbury, Conn.) got things started as he singled to center field with one out. He would advance to third shortly after with back-to-back walks. With the bases loaded and two outs remaining,
Bryan Dorsey (Cheshire, Conn.) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in the first run of the game.
In the next at-bat,
Ryan Geffert (Plymouth, Pa.) doubled to center field to drive in his team-high 13 RBI of the season. With runners on second and third and two outs in the inning, #A.J. Rouleau# (Westborough, Mass.) singled up the middle to drive in both runners, however he would be thrown out at second while trying to turn his single into a double.
The Owls would add two more runs in the next inning.
Michael Cleary (West Boylston, Mass.) stepped to the plate with a runner on third and one out and would connect on a double, driving in the fifth run of the game. Cleary would later score on a passed ball as the Owls controlled a 6-0 lead after four innings.
Pace wouldn't back down easily, however, as they added two runs in the sixth and one in the eighth. The comeback would only go so far as
Ed Bethke (Guilford, Conn.) and
Kyle Penney (Columbia, Conn.) shutdown the Setters offense, holding them to one run and two hits combined.
Cleary went 1-for-2 from the plate with a double, RBI and run scored to lead the offense.
A.J. Rouleau added two RBI and
Ryan Geffert went 1-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored.
The Owls return to the field tomorrow as they get another look at Pace in New York, N.Y. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
