NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Megan Caporossi (Northford, Conn.) tallied two homeruns in game one on Wednesday afternoon, as the Southern Connecticut State University softball team took one of two games from Assumption College at Pelz Field. The Owls opened Northeast-10 Conference play with a 9-7 win in game one, but dropped a 7-5 decision through six innings in game two. The Owls moved to 13-7 overall and 1-1 in conference competition.

In the front end of the twinbill, Southern wasted very little time finding the scoreboard. Khristle Lee (Aztec, N.M.) led off the first inning with a walk and came around to score on an RBI double from Kerry Iacomini (Pleasantville, N.Y.) for a 1-0 lead.

SCSU's offense came back to life in the third inning, tacking on three more runs on three hits and an error. Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.) led off the inning with a triple and was followed by Lee with an infield single. Caporossi provided the big hit with a three-run homerun to left centerfield, granting the Owls a 4-0 advantage.

After a three-run top of the fourth for the visiting Greyhounds, the Owls bounced back with a big bottom half of the frame. Caporossi capped off the scoring column with her second three-run homerun of the game, extending their lead to 8-3. Bucko, Lee and Kristin Whitley (North Andover, Mass.) each came around to score in the inning.

The Owls added one more in the sixth and held off the Greyhounds in the top of the seventh to hang on for the 9-7 victory. Iacomini hurled four strong innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits and stuck out two for her fourth win of the season. Jayme Larson (Aurora, Colo.) relieved Iacomini in the fifth inning and closed out the game for her second save of the year.

Shortened due to darkness, game two featured a six inning contest that consisted of 12 runs, but only five for the home team. Meryl Ragaini (Seymour, Conn.) put the Owls in front in the second inning, 2-0, with her first career homerun to left centerfield. Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.) came around to score from first after reaching base on a walk.

Bucko led off the next inning with her sixth homerun of the season for a commanding 3-0 advantage. However, the Greyhounds responded with seven unanswered runs to take the lead 7-3. The Owls scored two more in the sixth, but the umpire called the game due to darkness. Brittany Hill (Durham, Conn.) was charged with her third loss of the campaign.

The Owls return to action on April 2 when the squad continues conference play against Pace. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Pelz Field.
