WALTHAM, Mass. - The Southern Connecticut State University softball team improved to 33-11 on the season with a doubleheader sweep of Bentley on Friday afternoon. The Owls won the opener by a 2-0 final before cruising to a 12-3, five-inning win in the nightcap.
The Owls scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings of game one. Megan Caporossi (Northford, Conn.) tripled with one out in the fourth. One out later, Alyssa Pagano (Monroe, Conn.) came through with a RBI double to put the Owls in front for good.
The other run came in the sixth. Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.) tripled to lead off the frame and came in on a RBI single by Khristle Lee (Aztec, N.M.).
Winning pitcher Kerry Iacomini (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) went the first five innings to improve to 11-1. Jayme Larson (Aurora, Colo.) went the last two innings to earn the save.
SCSU jumped out to a 12-0 lead after two and half innings in game two and breezed to the win. Caporossi hit a two-run homer and senior center fielder Julianne Flood (Poughquag, N.Y.) had an RBI single to pace the offense in the first inning. Caporossi added a three-run home run in the second inning, while Flood had a RBI single.
Four more SCSU runs came across in the third, highlighted by a two-run single by Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.).
Brittany Hill (Durham, Conn.) went five innings to earn the win in game two.
The Owls return to action tomorrow for a doubleheader against Southern New Hampshire.
