INDIANA, Pa. – The Southern Connecticut State University opened its 2010 season on Saturday with a 16-6 loss to Indiana University (Pa.) in the season opener for both teams.
IUP struck first with a 12 play, 49-yard drive that culminated with a 28-yard field goal by Craig Burgess.
After a quick Owls' possession, the Crimson Hawks struck on their first play back with a 34-yard touchdown run from Roy-al Edwards. Following a PAT by Burgess, IUP held a 10-0 lead. It was a cushion that it carried into the locker room at halftime.
After a scoreless third quarter, Burgess connected on a 45-yard field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter to extend the IUP lead to 13-0.
Southern Connecticut put together its most impress drive of the day midway through the final frame. The Owls marched down the field with an 11-play, 92-yard drive that culiminated with a 2-yard run from
Rashaad Slowley (Mount Vernon, N.Y.).
However, IUP took the ball back and assembled a drive that went just ove field minutes and concluded with Burgess' third field goal of the day, a 29-yard conversion.
Kevin Lynch (Medfield, Mass.) finished 17-for-36 for 184 yards.
John Wiechman (Buxton, Maine) led the ground attack with 75 yards on 10 carries. Sean Donnelly (Framingham, Mass.) led the Owls' receivers with four catches.
Samuel Johnson (Newark, N.J.) had nine tackles to lead the defense in that department.
The Owls return to action on Saturday, Sept. 11 when they host No. 7 nationally ranked West Liberty University at Jess Dow Field.
