WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior running back
Rashaad Slowley (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) rushed for 236 of his career-high 288 yards in the second half and scored four touchdowns as the Southern Connecticut State University football team outscored Assumption by a 31-3 margin in the second half en route to a 38-24 win over the Greyhounds.
The Owls, winners of four in a row, are now 4-1, 3-0 in Northeast-10 Conference play. Assumption is 1-4, 0-3 in league action.
Southern Connecticut trailed 21-7 at halftime but stormed out of the gate in the second half. Slowley broke free for a 71-yard touchdown run on the second play after halftime to close the gap to 21-14 after a PAT by
Christopher Hazelton (Bristol, Conn.).
On the ensuing Assumption possession,
Michael Escobar (Danbury, Conn.) intercepted a Greyhounds pass. The Owls were able to turn that into three points on a 33-yard field goal by Hazelton to get within four at 21-17. Assumption countered with a field goal to restore the lead to seven points, but the Owls' defense would hold their opponent off the scoreboard the rest of the day.
Slowley scored on a three-yard run with 4:46 left in the third quarter to tie the score at 24-24 after a successful PAT. The game stayed that way through three quarters.
The issue was still in doubt late in the fourth, but the Owls assembled an 11-play, 83-yard drive over 4:48 that culminated on a five-yard run by Slowley.
Defensive back
Kamal Mgaresh (Medford, Mass.) then put the game out of reach with a 53-yard interception return to make it a 38-24 final.
The Owls fell behind early as Assumption struck on an 83-yard touchdown pass midway through the first quarter. However, SCSU tied the game at 7-7 on the ensuing drive, closed with a 14-yard scoring run from Slowley, before Assumption scored the game's next 10 points.
Quarterback
Kevin Lynch (Medfield, Mass.) finished 20-of-38 for 213 yards.
Willie Epps (Norwalk, Conn.) and
Andre Privott (Middletown, Conn.) each had six catches for 95 and 58 yards, respectively.
Davel Campbell (Bridgeport, Conn.) led the defense with nine tackles.
The Owls are back in action on Friday night when they host New Haven in a battle of NE-10 unbeatens.
