MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – The No. 23 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University baseball team capped its opening weekend with a perfect 4-0 mark thanks to a doubleheader sweep of Felician and C.W. Post on Sunday. The Owls defeated C.W. Post, 6-5, in 10 innings in the opener before defeating Felician, 7-1, in the nightcap.
Kevin Pettine (Somerset, Mass.) threw a complete game against Felician, giving up one earned run on three hits, walking two and striking out a career-high 14. The offense was led by oufielder
Bryan Dorsey (Cheshire, Conn.) who went 2-for-4 with two triples, two runs scored and three RBI. #T.K. Kiernan# (Wallingford, Conn.) also provided some offense going 2-for-4 as well with a double and a RBI.
In the nightcap, the Owls held a 5-1 lead in the ninth before C.W. Post tied the game with four unearned runs. SCSU loaded the bases in the 10th and came up with a walk-off win when Kiernan's shot to second base allowed the winning run to score.
Dorsey went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI against the Pioneers.
Ryan Geffert (Plymouth, Pa.) also went 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs scored. #T.J. Shea# (Hamden, Conn.) also had two hits and two runs scored, while
Kyle Cummings (Hamden, Conn.) also chipped in two hits.
Michael Johnston (Thomaston, Conn.) worked the final four outs and merited just one hit to pick up the win.
The Owls will now have a week off before they head down to Flemington, N.J. starting March 5 to play Nyack and Merrimack. The game against Nyack College on March 5 is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
