NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University softball team split its season opener with a win and a loss at home against Dominican College today. The Owls won the first half of the doubleheader 11-4, but fell short in a 13-inning slugfest, 7-6, in the nightcap.
In the first game,
Jessica Rosa (Wallingford Conn.) pitched 5.2 solid innings giving up just four runs on six hits and was relieved by
Jayme Larson (Aurora, Colo.) who earned the save in 1.1 innings pitched allowing just two base-runners. Leading the way for the Owls on the offensive end,
Kristin Whitley North Andover, Mass.) went 3-4 with a pair of homeruns and 4 rbis, while
Stacy Pouliot (Mystic, Conn.) added a 2-run homerun, and Rosa and
Jillian Thibault (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) each had two hits a piece.
In game two of the double header,
Jayme Larson got roughed up for three runs in the top of the first but settled down to give up just two runs over the course of the next 11 innings until Dominican ended it with well timed hitting in the top of the 13th. Not to be out done, the Owls answered when called upon in the clutch with a run to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, ninth and almost enough runs to continue the campaign in the final 13th inning. The Owls played great small ball keeping it within the confines of the stadium but still putting up runs. Whitley once again had a stellar game going 3-5 with 2 rbis and Rosa had two rbis to help out her relief pitcher from the first game in Larson. Seemed like the game would continue past the 13th inning even though the Owls were down two runs.
Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.) scored on a Rosa sacrifice to the pitcher from third to bring the game to within a run. Poor base-running finally cleared the bases as Pouliot was caught trying to steal home on a past ball just feet from the catcher.
The Owls start their Florida swing this week as they play nine games in five days in Clermont, Fla. with the first game against Molly College on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.
