SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The No. 13 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University baseball team used contrasting styles to record a doubleheader sweep of American International on Saturday. In the game one, the Owls used a three-run homerun from senior catcher Nick DeProspo (Worcester, Mass.) to turn a 2-0 deficit into an eventual 3-2 win. Southern Connecticut then went on to pound the Yellow Jackets in the nightcap, 10-1, behind strong pitching and a 15-hit attack. The Owls are now 15-0 on the year following the sweep. They are one win from tying the program-record of 16 straight wins to begin the season.
In game one. the Owls were lead by their leadoff man Kyle Cummings (Hamden, Conn.) who was a perfect 2-for-2 with a run scored. DeProspo led the team with all three of the team's rbi. Kyle Rosadino (Berwyn, Pa.) and #T.K. Kiernan# (Wallingford, Conn.) both collected hits in the game. Steve Landell (Higganum, Conn.) was the starting pitcher for game one and went six innings, giving up a three runs on six hits. Chris Zbin (Colchester, Conn.) received the win going one inning and only giving up one hit.
In game two, the Owls were firing on all cylinders. All the starters had at least one hit in the game and six out of the nine starters had multiple hits in the game. First basemen Ryan Geffert (Plymouth, Pa.) and centerfielder Ryan Cleary (West Boylston, Mass.) both collected two hits and two rbi in the game. Cummings, #A.J. Rouleau# (Westborough, Mass.), Bryan Dorsey (Chesire, Conn.), and Rosadino all collected two hits in the game as well. Righthander, Kevin Pettine (Somerset, Mass.) started for the Owls and recorded the win going eight innings, and gave up only two hits while striking out two. Sean Leahy (Maybrook, N.Y) threw the final inning of the game and gave up one run on three hits.
The Owls will play Tuesday, March 22nd against the College of Saint Rose. The game is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
