WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 5 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University Owls shut out the University of New Haven 4-0. The Owls did most of their damage in the second inning with a two-rbi triple from
Michael Cleary (West Boylston, Mass.) and a single up the middle from #T.J. Shea# (Hamden, Conn.), which scored Cleary. Southern was able to get another run in the fourth on a wild pitch that scored Cleary from third.
Steve Landell (Higganum, Conn.) started for the Owls giving up no runs on seven hits and struck out five in six innings of work.
Kevin Pettine (Somerset, Mass.) relieved Landell in the seventh and went the final three innings of the game. Pettine gave up no hits and fanned five batters.
The offense was powered by Cleary who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Cleanup hitter
Ryan Geffert (Plymouth, Pa.) helped the offense going 2-for-4 with a run scored and #A.J. Rouleau# (Westborough, Mass.) chipped in a hit and a runs scored.
The Owls improve to 27-1 on the season and 12-1 in Northeast-10 action. New Haven dropped to 16-11, 5-6 in Northeast-10.
Southern next game will be Tuesday when they travel to Caldwell College. The game is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
