NEW HAVEN Conn. – The No. 5 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University baseball team receives it second loss of the year getting beat by New Haven 7-6. The Chargers got out early on the Owls putting up one run in the first inning and two runs in the third. The Owls got on the board in the third with an RBI double by
Ryan Geffert (Plymouth, Pa.) They struck for another run in the fifth with a leadoff double by
Kyle Cummings (Hamden, Conn.) and scored on a single to the left side by
Kyle Rosadino (Berwyn, Pa.). Southern evened the score n the sixth with a bases loaded walk by
Nick DeProspo (Worcester, Mass.). Geffert put the Owls out in front in the seventh with a first-pitch, leadoff home run to right center. The Chargers regained the lead in the eighth with a bases loaded single and a while pitch to drive in two runs.
The Owls retook the lead in the eighth with a two-run RBI single by
A.J. Rouleau (Westborough, Mass.). New Haven eventually came back in the top of the ninth with a bases loaded single. In the top of the tenth the Chargers added another run to take the lead 7-6 and went on to win the game.
Steve Simon (Middlefield, Conn.) started for the Owls going six and 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and struck out 10 batters. #A.J. Turnier# (Waterford, Conn.) relieved Simon in the sixth and went 2/3 of an inning giving up.
Michael Johnston (Thomaston, Conn.) came in the eighth and went three innings giving up two runs on three hits and fanning two batters. Johnston received his first loss of the year.
Offensively, Cummings led the team going 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Geffert went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored while Rouleau added two hits and two RBI of his own.
The Owls next game will be April 16 when they travel to North Easton, Mass. to face Stonehill for a double-header at noon.
