RINGE, N.H. – The No. 5 Nationally Ranked Southern Connecticut State baseball team suffers its first lose today, splitting with Franklin Pierce 4-2 and 3-1. The Owls were riding a 22-game winning streak to start the season. The game one starter for the Owls was
Steve Landell (Higganum, Conn.) who tossed eight innings, giving up two runs on six hits and fanned seven. With the scored tied 2-2, #A.J. Turnier# (Waterford, Conn.) relieved Landell in the ninth and threw a scoreless inning to extend the game to extra innings. In the top of the tenth, the Owls put two runs on the board with a homerun from
Nick DeProspo (Worcester, Mass.) and an RBI groundout by #A.J. Rouleau# (Westborough, Mass.). DeProspo led the offense going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Michael Johnston (Thomaston, Conn.) came in the bottom of the tenth to pick up his fifth save of the season. Turnier picked up his fifth win of the season.
The rest of the offense for the Owls in game one came from
Kyle Rosadino (Berwyn, Pa.) who went 1-for-3 with an RBI and
Bryan Dorsey (Chesire, Conn.) who went 2-for-5.
In game two, the Owls had trouble scoring runs.
Chris Zbin (Colchester, Conn.) started for the Owls going all eight innings, giving up three runs on 10 hits and struck out six. Franklin Pierce was able to get to Zbin early, giving up a run in both the first and second innings. The Owls were only able to collect five hits in the game and didn't score a run until the ninth inning. Hits for the Owls came from
Kyle Cummings (Hamden, Conn.), DeProspo, Rouleau, Dorsey, and
Michael Cleary (West Boylston, Mass.). Cleary was the lone batter to collect an RBI which came in the ninth.
With the split, the Owls improve to 22-1, 7-1 in Northeast-10 Conference Play. The Owls next game will be Tuesday April, 5 when they play at Assumption at 3:30 p.m.
