Owls Now 21-16 Overall After Splitting With AIC

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University softball team started its week today against American International College. The Owls lost the first game 10-6 in the opener. In the second game, the Owls scored four in the bottom of the first and did not look back as they cruised to a 4-2 victory.

Brittany Hill (Durham, Conn.) started the game giving up six runs, with four of them earned in the first, to fall behind early. Hill was yanked after just the first inning and received the loss falling to 5-8 on the season. Hill was relieved by Jessica Rosa (Wallingford, Conn.) in the second. Rosa gave up four earned through the next six innings with three strikeouts.

Kristin Whitley (North Andover, Mass.) led the offensive charge for the Owls going 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. Jillian Thibault (Ballston Spa, N.Y.), Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.), and Stacy Pouliot (Mystic, Conn.) each joined in on the action with two hits apiece.

In game two, Jayme Larson (Aurora, Colo.) cruised through the first five innings allowing just a handful of base runners while registering five strike outs. AIC threatened in the fifth and the sixth off untimely errors by the Owls' defense but Larson bunkered down and allowed no earned runs through the game to improve to 12-6 on the year.

Thibault led off the bottom of the first with a triple to deep left field followed by Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.) reaching on an error by the short stop. Whitley singled to left to score Thibault. Downs walked to load the bases setting up for Robin Priest (Cheshire, Conn.), who cleared the bases with a double to left center to take a 4-0 lead.

The Owls are now 21-16 overall with a 14-8 conference record.

The Owls will be back in action home against New Haven tomorrow scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
