SCSU Softball Sweeps Saint Michael's, 9-4 and 9-6

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University softball swept Saint Michael's, 9-4 and 9-6, in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at Pelz Field in New Haven, Conn. With the wins, Southern takes the season series against the Purple Knights with three wins in four games and improved to 15-15 overall and 8-12 in the NE10.

Nadia Cestari and Gianna Iaquinto both had four-hit days. Cestari was 4-for-7 with two RBI and three runs scored and Iaquinto was 4-for-8 with a RBI and three runs scored. Sophia Angelioni was 3-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored. Ashley Lewis picked up the win in relief in both games to improve to 7-7 on the season. For the doubleheader, Lewis allowed two unearned runs on five hits in six innings of work while striking out nine.



GAME 1: SCSU 9, Saint Michael's 4
Southern overcame a four-run deficit and scored two runs in the 5th before erupting for seven runs in the bottom of the 6th. Gianna Iaquinto was 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Karley Austin was 2-for-4 with three RBI and Olivia Young blasted her first home run of the season. Giselle DeLutri took the no decision after giving up four runs over five innings with five strikeouts before Lewis logged two scoreless innings.

Facing a 4-0 deficit, in the 5th inning Cestari led off with a single down the left field line and went to third when Samantha LaFemina's ground ball to third was thrown away. Izzy Ingersoll then drove in Cestari on a fielder's choice that retired LaFemina at second, but Ingersoll was thrown out attempting to sneak over to second. Iaquinto followed with a single before Brianna Pierson walked before Austin drove Iaquinto in to cut the Purple Knights' lead in half, 4-2.

In the 6th, Young made it 4-3 when she turned on the third pitch of her at-bat and sent a rocket over the left field fence. Cheyenne LaTouche then singled before Cestari bunted her over to second. Christina DeNovellis followed with a pinch-hit triple down the right field line that score LaTouche and tied the game at 4-4. LaFemina subbed back in to run for DeNovellis and scored on Ingersoll's base hit to give the Owls a 5-4 lead.

Iaquinto then followed with a single before Pearson. Austin then hit a line drive to left center that scored Ingersoll and Iaquinto to give Southern a 7-4 lead. The next three batters – Sophia Angiolini, Young and LaTouche – all walked to push two more runs across and give the Owls the 9-4 win.

GAME 2: SCSU 9, Saint Michael's 6
Cestari starred in this one with a 3-for-4 nightcap that included two doubles and that featured two RBI and two runs scored. Angiolini was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored while Pearson also collected two hits and DeNovellis drove in two runs.

Southern jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st when Ingersoll singled to lead off the inning before scoring on a base hit by Pearson. In the 3rd, Austin reached on an error before Angiolini singled to left. Young ground out to move both runners up before DeNovellis followed with her second pinch hit of the day – this time driving in two runs. Cestari followed with a double down the left field line to bring DeNovellis home to give Southern a 5-0 lead.

The 4th took a turn when Saint Michael's scored six runs to take a 6-5 lead. In the bottom of the 4th, Austin walked and then stole second before Angiolini singled up the middle to bring Austin home with the tying run. After the next two batters were retired, Cestari delivered a two-out double to bring Angiolini home and give the Owls a 7-6 lead.

From that point, Lewis was dominant, retired the Purple Knights' next nine batters over the last three innings including the last six on infield ground balls. Angiolini drove in Iaquinto with a sacrifice fly in the 5th and Iaquinto drove in Cestari in the 6th to give the Owls a 9-6 lead.

Southern is back in action when it travels to Springfield, Mass. on Tuesday, April 14 to face American International in a NE10 doubleheader at 1 p.m. The Owls return home on Apr. 22 to host Adelphi and then close the regular season on May 1-2 against Assumption with Senior Day set for Sunday, May 2.
