SCSU Softball Splits NE10 DHer With Saint Michael's

Southern Connecticut State University softball split a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader against Saint Michael's, losing 6-3 before bouncing back with a 10-0 win in the second game. Southern goes to 13-15 overall and 6-10 in the NE10 while St. Michael's drops to 6-22 overall and 4-14 in conference play.

Nadia Cestari was 4-for-4 a RBI and two runs scored in the doubleheader while Izzy Ingersoll was 4-for-7 with three RBI. Gianna Iaquinto was 4-for-6 with three RBI and a run scored while Sophia Angioli was 3-for-6 with her first career home run.  



GAME ONE: SAINT MICHAEL'S, 6, SCSU, 3 
Izzy Ingersoll was 3-for-4 with a RBI and Nadia Cestari was 2-for-2 with a RBI and a runs scored, while Olivia Young also collected two hits. Ashley Lewis took the loss to drop to 4-5 on the year despite a solid performance that featured a season-best eighth strikeouts. Lewis cruised through six inninings, only allowing one unearned run, before giving up five runs in the 7th.  

In the second inning, Cheyenne LaTouche got walked before Nadia Cestari hit a single and advanced to second, on the throw, which sent LaTouche home, for the first run of the game. Then, Izzy Ingersoll recorded a single down the left side and after that, Gianna Ianquinto hit a single up the middle, which brought Cestari home, for a 2-0 lead. 

In the fourth inning, Saint Michael's got their first run on the board. However, in the sixth inning, LaTouche got walked again before Izzy Ingersoll hit a single up the middle, to bring LaTouche home, for a 3-1 lead. In the seventh inning, the Purple Knights offense exploded with five runs, to take a 6-3 lead. Despite the comeback efforts from the Owls, in the bottom of the seventh, Saint Michael's held on to take the 6-3 victory over Southern. 

GAME TWO: SCSU 10, SAINT MICHAEL'S 0 (5 Inn.) 
Southern Connecticut to a 10-0 Mercy Rule win against the Purple Knights in Game 2, scoring in each inning that they bat, incluidng a five-run 3rd inning.  Gianna Iaquinto was 3-for-3 a a triple and two RBI while Ingersoll also drove in two runs. Sophia Angiolino was 2-for-3 with two RBI and her first career home run while Cestari collected two more runs and scored twice.   

Giselle DeLutri improved to 4-5 after holding Saint Michael's scoreless on two hits while striking out six in five innings of work.   

In the bottom of the 1st, Iaquinto singled to center with one out before moving to third on Brianna Pearson's double over the head of the center fielder. Iaquinto scored on Karley Austin's ground ball to second before Angioli doubled down the left field line to score Pearson.  
 
In the 2nd, Cestari led off with a double and then stole third before scoring on an error by Saint Michael's shortstop on a ball hit by Cheyenne LeTouche. LeTouche scored on Iaquinto's two-out triple to right center. In the 3rd, Ausitn singled and went to third on an error before scoring on a single by Olivia Young. Ingersoll drove in two runs in the inning while Iaquinto and Pearson also drove in a run to give the Owls a 9-0 lead. Angiolini's first career homer gave the Owls the 10-0 edge.   

Southern and Saint Michael's will meet again on Sunday, Apr. 12 at 12 p.m. at Pelz Field.
