SHIRLEY, N.Y. – Junior Jessica Rosa (Wallingford, Conn.) snapped a scoreless tie leading off the bottom of the fifth inning and classmate Jayme Larson (Aurora, Colo.) made it stand up with a four-hit shutout as the Southern Connecticut State University softball team won its first round NCAA Tournament game against Dominican on Friday, 1-0. The Owls will now face Merrimack, a 2-1 winner over top-seeded Dowling on Saturday morning. It will be the fourth time in the past seven days that SCSU and Merrimack will face off.

The Owls improved to 33-19 overall with the win. Dominican is now 34-17.

Dominican put two runners on in the first and third inning, and the Owls didn't manage a hit until the fourth when Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.) reached on an infield single.

Rosa opened the fifth with a no-doubter over the center field fence. The Owls went on to load the bases in the frame but couldn't push another run across.

Larson finished with two strikeouts and two walks to move to 20-8 on the year.
