NEW HAVEN Conn. – The No. 8 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University baseball team defeated UMass Lowell today, 3-1 and 2-0. The Owls claimed the Northeast-10 Conference regular season title with the two wins. The Owls jumped out early in the first game with two runs in the second off a triple by
Bryan Dorsey (Cheshire, Conn.) and back-to-back doubles by
T.K. Kiernan (Wallingford, Conn.) and
Michael Cleary (West Boylston, Mass.). Kiernan added another RBI double in the sixth inning. In game two, the Owls scored one in the third inning with the help of an error by the center fielder. Southern was able to pick up another run in the seventh with an RBI single through the left side from
Kyle Rosadino (Berwyn, Pa.).
Kevin Pettine (Somerset, Mass.) started game one for the Owls giving up one run on three hit and striking out nine in eight innings of work.
Michael Johnston (Thomaston, Conn.) picked up the save going the final inning.
T.K. Kiernan provided a spark with his bat collecting two hits and two RBI in game one. Cleary also helped driving in one run on his only hit.
Chris Zbin (Colchester, Conn.) started game two and went seven innings, giving up no runs on three hits and fanned seven batters.
Ryan Yerina (Trumbull, Conn.) relieved Zbin in the eighth and only allowed one hit.
Michael Johnston (Thomaston, Conn.) picked up his second save on the day going the final inning. Rosadino led the way for the Owls collecting one hit and both RBI on the day.
The Owls improve to 37-4-1 on the season and 21-4-1 in Northeast-10 conference play. The Northeast-10 Conference tournament is set to kick off Thursday, May 11.
