BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The No. 22 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University softball team split its doubleheader matchup against C.W. Post Saturday afternoon. The Owls dropped the first game 6-2 and won the second game 3-0. The Owls improved to 9-1 on the season.
C.W. Post jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the third inning. The Owls tried to answer with runners on base but fell short ending the fourth inning still trailing. Post added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning off two doubles making the score 6-0.
Southern built momentum in the top of the fifth inning with runners on first and second but could not connect, ending the inning on a ground out to the shortstop.
The Owls got on the score board in the sixth inning when
Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.) hit a double to right center field.
Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.) followed up with a single to left field setting up
Kate Hoffman (Orange, Conn.) to hit a single into left center bringing in Bucko and Downs closing the gap 6-2. C.W. Post would hold on for the victory handing Southern its first loss of the season.
Hoffman continued her outstanding performance in game two hitting a single to third base allowing
Nicole Buch (Darien, Conn.) to score on a passed ball giving the Owls a 1-0 lead after the fourth inning. C.W. Post threatened with base runners on first and second in the bottom of the fourth but Southern's defense took over and ended the inning with a ground out throw to second base.
The Owls continued their offense when Hoffman smacked a two-run double bringing in Downs and
Kristin Whitley (North Andover, Mass.) lengthening the score to 3-0 for the win.
Jayme Larson (Aurora, Colo.) notched her fourth win of the season striking out four batters.
Southern is back in action Sunday, March 18 at home for a doubleheader against Caldwell. The games are scheduled to start at 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
