BOCA RATON, Fla. - The No. 7/14 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University baseball team is defeated by Lynn University today, 8-2. The Fighting Knights got out to an early lead in the first inning with a double by the designated hitter and later came around to score on a passed ball. The Owls tied the game up in the third with a single by
T.J. Shea (Hamden, Conn.) who was bunted over to second and then scored on a
Sam Greenberg (Guilford, Conn.) single up the middle. Lynn took the lead back in the bottom half of the inning with a walk, followed by a single to advance the runner to third, and a sacrifice fly-out to score the base runner. SCSU quickly responded in the fourth with a homerun down the right field line from
Ryan Geffert (Plymouth, Pa.). Lynn then broke out for three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-2 lead. The Fighting Knights added an additional run in the bottom of the seven to take a four-run lead. The Owls threatened with two runners on, with two outs in the eighth inning but failed to produce a run. Lynn added two insurance runs in the bottom half of the eighth, with a two-run homer by the designated hitter.
Ryan Yerina (Trumbull, Conn.) started for Southern Connecticut is tabbed with the loss. Yerina tossed 4 2/3 innings and gave up five runs on 10 hits.
Kevin Madera (Newington, Conn.) relieved Yerina in the fifth inning with two outs.
Geffert led the squad with two hits on the day. Geffert also collected one RBI and a run scored. Greenberg tallied the only other RBI on his only hit of the day.
Bryan Dorsey (Cheshire, Conn.), Shea, and
Nick Baviello (Orange, Conn.) all recorded a hit in the loss.
The Owls move to 14-4 on the season. Southern Connecticut wraps up it Florida trip tomorrow when they Barry University down Miami Shores, Fla. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
