NEW HAVEN, Conn. The No. 22 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University softball team continued its impressive season with two wins over conference opponent Le Moyne Tuesday afternoon at Pelz field. The Owls won the first game 8-0 and the second game 5-1. Southern improved its overall record to 13-1, 2-0 (NE-10).
Southern wasted no time in the first inning when
Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.) homered to left field bringing the score to 1-0. The Owls added to their lead with
Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.) hitting a single allowing
Nicole Buch (Darien, Conn.) to score.
Southern threatened with Bucko and Buch on base setting up Downs to bring them both home on a home run to left field in the fourth inning bringing the score to 6-0.
The Owls ended the first game on a mercy rule driving in two more runs to end the game.
Kate Hoffman (Orange, Conn.) doubled allowing teammates
Kristin Whitley (North Andover, Mass.) and Bucko to score giving the Owls their first conference victory.
Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) picked up the victory for Southern only allowing one hit and striking out five batters.
Brittany Bucko picked up right where she left off in the second match-up hitting her second homer of the day to left field giving the Owls an early 1-0 lead on the first inning. Southern notched another run when Hoffman drove in Whitley on a single.
Downs added more assurance when her single in the third inning brought in teammate Buch to score. Hoffman followed suit with a single bringing in Whitley from third base.
Julie Muscarella (Suffield, Conn.) topped the inning off with a single hit driving in
Alyssa Downs.
Le Moyne tried to rally scoring one run but the Owls defense took control to lock in conference victory.
Senior
Jayme Larson (Aurora, Colo.) improved her overall record to 7-0 allowing six hits and fanning eight batters.
Southern will travel to Lakewood, N.J. for a doubleheader matchup against Georgian Court University on Wednesday, March 21. The games are scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
