Softball Splits Doubleheader With Georgian Court

Lakewood, N.J. – The No. 21 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut softball team split their doubleheader game with Georgian Court University Wednesday afternoon. The Owls took game one 12-0 and dropped the second game 6-5. Jessica Rosa (Wallingford, Conn.) smacked a two run homerun to give the Owls the lead in the sixth inning, but darkness ended the inning early, erasing Rosa's homerun lead.

After four scoreless innings in game one, Southern went to work scoring three runs in the fifth inning.  Kristin Whitley (North Andover, Mass.) got things started with a single to left field sending in teammate Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.). Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.) followed with a double bringing in Nicole Buch (Dairen, Conn.). Kate Hoffman (Orange, Conn.) reached on an error allowing Whitley to score closing the inning with a 3-0.

The fifth inning brought more success for the Owls at the plate. Bucko continued her dominance smacking her third home run in two days into left field bringing the score to 6-0. Downs doubled to right center to cap off the inning with a 7-0 lead going into the seventh inning.

Southern opened up the scoring in the seventh inning tallying five runs. Downs added a homerun of her own notching three RBI's in the process. The Owls ended the game with a 12-0 victory.

Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) was credited with the win improving her overall record to 6-1 and allowed only four hits and seven strikeouts.

After being down 3-0 after the first inning, the Owls got on the board in the third inning scoring two runs. Downs hit her second homerun of the day to right center bringing in Buch to narrow the gap to 2-3.

With Georgian Court adding another three runs in the third to bring the score to 6-0, Southern gained two more runs off a double from Bucko and a single from Whitley bringing the score to 6-4 after the fourth inning.

Southern added one more run in the sixth inning with Buch's doubling to left field. Buch almost tied the game off of Whitley's single, but was called out at the plate from a throw from third base.

The Owls are back in action at home Saturday, March 24 for a doubleheader against Pace. The games are scheduled to start at 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
