NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior captain Elaina Heiple (Cheshire, Conn.) posted new career-highs in goals (five) and points (six), but the Southern Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team lost to American International College on Wednesday, 20-12.

The Owls are now 1-4 overall and 0-3 in Northeast-10 Conference play. AIC moved to 1-3, 1-1 in league action.

The game was tightly contested for the entire 60 minutes, with the Yellow Jackets using some late goals to create distance in the waning moments.

AIC scored the first two goals of the game before the Owls got on the scoreboard with a tally from Katie Walter (Woodbridge, Conn.). After a AIC score, Emily Orser (Hamden, Conn.) and Sarah Muise (Killingworth, Conn.) each scored to knot the score at 3-3. Muise's goal came after nearly 16 minutes of scoreless action.

AIC took a 4-3 lead 90 seconds after Muise's goal, but the Owls responded less than a minute later when Jessica Shaw (Beverly, Mass.) evened the game off a pass from Heiple.

The Yellow Jackets scored five of the final six goals of the first half, with Heiple finding the back of the net for the Owls. AIC held a 9-5 lead at the break.

Southern Connecticut closed to within two early in the second half when Heiple and Orser tallied goals to make it 9-7. The Yellow Jackets, though, outscored the Owls by an 11-5 margin the rest of the way to post the win. Heiple added three goals in the second half, while Erica Martino (Monroe, Conn.) also scored for the Owls.

Lynette Martinez (Stamford, Conn.) finished with 10 saves for SCSU.

The Owls are back in action on Saturday for a road game at No. 7 nationally ranked Stonehill.
