NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse lost to Assumption, 12-10, in an NE10 matchup on Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds improved to an overall record of 3-8 and an NE10 record of 2-4. The Owls dropped to an overall record of 10-3 and an NE10 record of 4-2.
Abigail Nolan scored a team-best of three goals and had a team-best of three points.
Rebecca Sibley and
Allie Welder scored two goals, while
Anna Meserve,
Macy Vail and
Breya Montague all scored a goal.
Hannah Hathway led the Owls with an assist.
Anna Meserve won a team-best of five draws and caused a team-best of two turnovers.
Breya Montague picked up a team-best of three ground balls. In goal,
Caelan Connors recorded nine saves against the Greyhounds.
In the first quarter, from the first draw, both teams knew it would be a competitive battle. Southern got on the board first with a goal from
Breya Montague. However, the Greyhounds responded with three unanswered goals, as they went into the second, with a 3-1 lead.
In the second quarter,
Rebecca Sibley and
Macy Vail, both scored a goal for Southern, within a minute of one another. The Owls tied the game, 3-3, with eight minutes left. Assumption didn't go away as they scored two more goals, to extend their lead back to two goals.
Allie Welder scored her first goal of the game, as she helped the Owls get within a goal of the Greyhounds before halftime.
In the third quarter,
Abigail Nolan scored her first goal of the day, early on, in the second half. Then,
Anna Meserve scored her second goal, to put the Owls in the lead, 6-5. The Greyhounds answered with two goals of their own, to tie then retake the lead.
Rebecca Sibley scored her first goal before Assumption recorded two more goals.
Abigail Nolan recorded her second goal of the game and got within one goal of the Greyhounds. Assumption held on to a close lead of 9-8, as they headed into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Greyhounds got on the board first but
Abigail Nolan then responded with her third goal of the game. With less than five minutes left to play, Assumption scored another goal, as they extended their lead back up to two.
Allie Welder recorded her second goal of the day, as she helped the Owls, close in on the lead of the Greyhounds. Time ticked down as the Owls tried to hold on and continue with their momentum swing; however, Assumption scored their 12th goal of the game, with 37 seconds left. The Greyhounds sealed the close, 12-10 victory over Southern Connecticut.
The Owls will be back in action at Jess Dow Field on Wednesday, April 15 at 4:00 pm in an NE10 matchup against Bentley.
