Strong Pitching, Timely Hitting Send No. 21 Nationally Ranked Softball To Sweep Of Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - Keyed by a pair of complete game pitching efforts from hurlers Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) and Jayme Larson (Aurora, Colo.) and a balanced offensive effort, the No. 21 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University softball team swept a doubleheader at Adelphi on Sunday by scores of 3-0 and 5-1.

The Owls improved to 17-3 overall and 5-1 in Northeast-10 Conference play with the sweep.

Offensively, Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.) went 5-for-8 with three runs scored from the top of the Owls' lineup. Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.) connected for a home run and drove in five runs in the contests. Kristin Whitley (North Andover, Mass.) had three hits, two runs scored and a RBI.

The opener was a scoreless game until the fifth. With two outs, Bucko singled and moved to second on a walk from Nicole Buch (Darien, Conn.). Whitley and Downs then followed with RBI singles to make it 2-0.

SCSU added an insurance run in the seventh when Downs plated Bucko with a bases loaded groundout.

Cockrill scattered six hits and struck out seven in recording the victory for the Owls.

The Owls struck in the top of the first in the nightcap. Bucko singled to start the inning, moved to second on a groundout and third on a single by Whitley. Downs drove in Bucko with a RBI groundout before Kate Hoffman (Orange, Conn.) drove in Whitley with a RBI single to make it 2-0.

SCSU tacked on three more in the third. Downs extended the lead to 4-0 with a two-run home run.  Later in the frame, Stacy Pouliot (Mystic, Conn.) scored Hoffman with  a RBI single.

Larson merited seven hits and fanned seven, while allowing just one run.

The Owls return to action on Wednesday for a home doubleheader against Saint Rose.
