CLERMONT, Fla. - The Southern Connecticut State University softball team opened the 2012 season with wins over Wayne State College and Concordia College this afternoon. The Owls took the first game 8-2 against Concordia, and won the second game 6-5 against Wayne State. Southern improves to 2-0 on the season.
The Owls opened the scoring against Wayne State when
Kristin Whitley (North Andover, Mass.) connected for a solo homer in the first inning.
The Wildcats tied the game in the third before the Owls took the lead for good with three runs in the fifth. Whitley drove in a run with a bases loaded walk before
Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.) plated two more with a single.
Wayne State scored once in the bottom of the fifth, but the Owls extended their lead to 6-2 with two more runs in the top of the sixth. With two outs, SCSU rallied to load the bases before Whitley knocked in
Shawna Mallory (Simi Valley, Calif.) and
Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.).
The Wildcats scored once in the sixth and two more times in the seventh, but the Owls were able to hold on.
Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) went the distance to earn the win for the Owls in the circle.
In game two action against Concordia,
Jayme Larson (Aurora, Colo) pitched a seven-hitter and
Kristin Whitley (North Andover, Mass) went 2-3 with 3 RBIs.
Kate Hoffman (Orange, Conn) also went 2-3 with two RBIs, while
Brittany Bucko (Wallington, NJ) scored three runs for the Owls.
Southern is back in action Thursday, March 8 for a double header against Dowling College. The games are scheduled to start at 9 and 11 a.m.
