NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 8 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University baseball team swept Assumption College today, 7-4, and 6-0. The Owls got off to a great start in game one with the lead-off hitter
Sam Greenberg (Guilford, Conn.) started off the inning with an inside-the-park homerun. SCSU added two more with a two-RBI double by
Ryan Geffert (Plymouth, Pa.). Southern Connecticut added their fourth run of the game in the second inning with a two-out RBI double by
Kyle Cummings (Hamden, Conn.). Cummings added another RBI double in the bottom of the fourth to increase the lead to 5-0. The Greyhounds got two runs back in the top of the fifth with an RBI single followed by an RBI triple. The Owls got both runs back in the bottom half of the inning with a two-RBI single from Peter Testa (Orange, Conn.). The Greyhounds struck for two runs in the top half of the seventh to make it a 7-4 game.
Cole Bryant (Newington, Conn.) started for the Owls and received the victory. Bryant gave up four runs on nine hits and fanned two batters through 6 and 2/3 innings pitched.
Steve Landell (Higganum, Conn.) relieved Bryant in the seventh and threw the final 2 and 1/3 innings. Landell did not allow a hit and struck out three batters.
Kyle Cummings led the offense going a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Michael Cleary (West Boylston, Mass.) added an additional three hits and a run scored.
T.K. Kiernan (Wallingford, Conn.) and
Bryan Dorsey (Cheshire, Conn.) each tallied two hits apiece.
In game two, the Owls struck for five runs in the first inning with an error by the pitcher that brought in Greenberg from third, then a bases clearing triple by Cleary, followed by a sacrifice fly-out to bring home Cleary. Southern Connecticut added its sixth run in the sixth inning with an RBI single by Testa. The six runs were more than enough for starting pitcher
Chris Zbin (Colchester, Conn.). Zbin allowed no runs on four hits and fanned 10 batters in eight innings of work.
Kevin Madera (Newington, Conn.) threw a scoreless final inning. Offensively,
T.J. Shea (Hamden, Conn.) led the Owls going 2-for-2 in the game. Cleary picked up three RBI in his only hit in the game.
The Owls are 19-7 on the season and 7-2 in Northeast-10 Conference action. They will be back in action Tuesday when they host cross-town rival University of New Haven. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
