WORCESTER, Mass. – Tallying four homeruns and 29 hits, the No. 18 Southern Connecticut softball team picked up two big road wins sweeping Assumption College 5-4, 10-4 Wednesday afternoon. SCSU improved to 29-5, 17-3 (NE-10).
Trailing by a run after the third, The Owl's offense got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning with
Kristin Whitley (North Andover, Mass.) delivering a homerun smash to centerfield to even the score at one apiece.
Alyssa Pagano (Monroe, Conn.) led the charge to put SCSU ahead in the fifth inning with a single hit setting up
Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.) to homer a two run blast putting Southern up 3-1 after five innings.
Assumption would answer with a two run homerun to even the score in the top of the sixth. The game would remain tied going into extra innings.
After conceding one run in the top of the ninth, the Owls were down to their final three outs trailing 4-3. With one runner in scoring position, Bucko would come through for Southern smashing her second two run homerun of the day giving SCSU the 5-4 lead and lock up the victory for game one.
Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) pitched a solid 6.0 innings only allowing five hits and striking out seven batters.
Jayme Larson (Aurora, Colo.) entered the game in the sixth and was credited the win for the Owls. The senior only allowed two hits and struck out five batters en-route to her 14
th victory on the year.
In game two action, Whitley continued her dominance at the plate hitting a triple to send home teammate
Nicole Buch (Darien, Conn.). Whitley advanced home on the play due to an out fielding error narrowing Assumption's lead to 3-2.
The Owls tied the game in the bottom of the third inning off a
Jessica Rosa (Wallingford, Conn.) RBI single into center field sending home
Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.) to put Southern ahead 4-3.
SCSU would explode for six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning led by Buch. The freshman started the inning with a homerun blast into right field adding two more runs for the Owls. Whitley would add another run off a passed ball widening the gap to 7-3.
Stacy Pouliot (Mystic, Conn.) put the game out of reach for Assumption with three run homerun into right field allowing teammates Rosa and
Kate Hoffman (Orange, Conn.) to cross the plate and put Southern up 10-4.
The game ended in the fifth inning due to lack of daylight sealing the victory for the Owls.
Larson picked up the win pitching 5.0 innings. The Colorado native only allowed seven hits and struck out three batters.
Southern is back in action Saturday, April 14 for a home doubleheader against UMass-Lowell.
