No. 18 Softball Sweeps UMass-Lowell 6-1, 9-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 18 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut softball team recorded 17 hits on the day en-route to a doubleheader sweep of UMass-Lowell 6-1, 9-1 Saturday afternoon at Pelz Field. SCSU improves to 31-5, (19-3 NE-10)
 
The Owls jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning off of  a Kate Hoffman (Orange, Conn.) RBI single to right field. Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.) added to the lead stealing home to put SCSU ahead going into the second inning.
 
After conceding a run in the third inning, the Owls offense exploded for four runs and five hits in the fifth inning. Jessica Rosa (Wallingford, Conn.) started the frame with a single hit to left field. Stacy Pouliot (Mystic Conn.) followed up with another single to third putting two on for the Owls. SCSU's Shawna Mallory (Simi Valley, Calif.) tallied a two run RBI single to lengthen the lead to 4-1. Mallory was brought home on the next play by Brittany Bucko's (Wallington, N.J.) home run to left field extending the Owl's lead.
 
Southern held on to the lead and closed out game one with seven hits.
 
Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) notched her 13th win of the season pitching seven solid innings with 11 strikeouts.
 
In game two of the doubleheader, Southern got on the board in the second inning tallying one run to take a 1-0 lead. Rosa started the drive with a single setting up teammate Pouliot to bring her home off a triple into right field.
 
SCSU added another run in the third inning with a Kristin Whitley (North Andover, Mass.) RBI single up the middle of field widening the lead to 2-0.
 
The fourth inning displayed more offense for SCSU, posting four runs and four hits. Downs began the inning with a double right field. After an intentional walk, and bases loaded, Pouliot struck again with a deep RBI double to center field sending home Downs and Hoffman. The Owls extended their lead with a wild pitch score and a Mallory RBI single to cap the inning off with a 6-0 lead.
 
The Riverhawks tried to rally adding a run in the fifth, but SCSU continued to execute adding two more runs. Hoffman was the difference maker drilling a two run home run into left field, and also added a game-ending single in the sixth to cap off the inning and lock up the victory for the Owls.
 
Jayme Larson (Aurora, Colo.) only allowed four hits with eight strikeouts in six innings of work. The senior tallied her 16th win of the season.
 
The Owls are back in action Sunday, April 14 for a home doubleheader against Merrimack.
