No. 18 Softball Split Doubleheader With New Haven

The Owls split their doubleheader match-up with New Haven Tuesday afternoon.

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 18 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut softball team split its doubleheader match-up with New Haven 4-2, 4-0 Tuesday afternoon. The Owls improved to 34-6 (21-4 NE-10).

Southern got on the scoreboard early tallying one run and three hits. Nicole Buch (Darien, Conn.) and Kristin Whitley (North Andover, Mass.) each connected on single hits setting up Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.) to single up the middle putting SCSU ahead 1-0.

After conceding three runs, the Owls remained idle after three scoreless innings. Trailing 3-1 in the top of the fifth, SCSU added a run off of a Whitley reach, brining Julie Muscarella (Suffield, Conn.) across the plate narrowing the UNH lead to one run.

The Chargers opened the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth, and held on to take game one of the doubleheader.

Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) pitched 6.0 solid innings and struck out eight batters.

In game two of the doubleheader the Owls struck first in the top of the first inning with a Downs sacrifice fly to right field bringing home Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.) who singled earlier in the inning. SCSU added another run on the next batter when Kate Hoffman (Orange, Conn.) hit an RBI single sending home Buch who also connected on a single. Jessica Rosa (Wallingford, Conn.) continued the drive. With two outs, the senior hit a single up the middle advancing Hoffman to third. Stacy Pouliot (Mystic, Conn.) added to the lead with an RBI single to centerfield. Shawna Mallory (Simi Valley, Calif.) capped the inning off with a single to left field and giving the Owls a 4-0 lead.

New Haven tried to rally in the sixth inning with two runners on, but Jayme Larson (Aurora, Colo.) stayed poised and finished the inning with a strikeout conserving the Owls lead.

Southern added three more assurance runs in the top of the seventh. Hoffman, Rosa and Pouliot added RBI's to lengthen the lead to 7-0 to close out the inning and seal the victory.

Larson picked up her 18th win of the season only allowing four hits with nine strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work.

SCSU is back in action Saturday, April 21 for a doubleheader at Bentley.
