SCSU Softball Splits Doubleheader with American International

Springfield Mass— Southern Connecticut State University Softball split a Northeast 10 conference doubleheader against the American International College Yellow Jackets. The Owls move to 16-16 overall and 9-13 in the NE10, while the Yellow Jackets move to 11-21 overall and 7-13 in the NE10.
 
In the circle for the Owls, Giselle DeLutri went the distance in game two tossing five innings allowing no runs on two hits, while striking out five. Offensively for the Owls, Gianna Iaquinto led the way with three hits, four RBI and a home run across both games. Along with Iaquinto, Brianna Pearson had four hits and three RBI.

Game 1: AIC 7, SCSU 6
In game one, Ashley Lewis got the start for the Owls tossing four innings allowing four runs on four hits while striking out two. In relief, Moira Collins came in and took the loss tossing two innings allowing three runs on four hits while striking out two.
 
Offensively for the Owls, Gianna Iaquinto led the way going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Along with Iaquinto, Izzy Ingersoll, Brianna Pearson and Karley Austin all had an RBI.
 
The Owls opened the days scoring in the top of the second. The inning began with a walk by Sophia Angiolini. From there, Cheyenne LaTouche would double down the left field line, which allowed Angiolini to advance to third. With two runners in scoring position, Nadia Cestaria walked to load up the bases. With the bases loaded and two outs, Ingersoll would get hit by an inside pitch, scoring Angiolini to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.
 
That lead would not last long as the Yellow Jackets responded in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game up at 1-1.
 
After a scoreless 4th inning, the Owls offense woke up again in the top of the fifth. The inning began with a walk from Ingersoll. From there, Iaquinto smacked a double to right center moving Ingersoll to third. With two runners in scoring position, Brianna Pearson delivered with a single to right field that scored Ingersoll to give the Owls the lead back as they took a 2-1 lead. The offense would not stop there, as Austin sent a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Iaquinto to expand the lead to 3-1.
 
Despite taking a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth, the Yellow Jackets responded in the bottom of the inning with four runs on five hits to take a 5-3 lead.
 
After surrendering the lead in the bottom of the fifth, the Owls took the lead back in the top of the sixth. The inning began with a single by Iris Rooney. Rooney advanced to third on a bunt by Lafemina and then a runners obstruction on a fielders choice. With a runner 60 feet away, Iaquinto sent a ball over the center field fence which scored two runners to give the Owls a 6-5 lead.
 
Unfortunately, that would be the last of the Owls offense and the Yellow Jackets picked up two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-6 win.
 
Game Two: SCSU 10, AIC 0 (5 innings)

In game two, Gisselle DeLutri got the start in the circle and she went the distance for a complete game shutout allowing no runs on two hits, while striking out five. Offensively for the Owls, Pearson and Angiolini led the way with two RBI and two hits each. Four other Owls had an RBI: Ingersoll, Iaquinto, Austin and Young. The Owls scored at least one run in every inning of play.
 
The Owls got the scoring started early in the first inning, with three runs. The inning began with three straight walks from Ingersoll, Iaquinto and Pearson to set up a bases loaded situation for Austin. From there, Austin grounded out to second base, which allowed Ingersoll to score giving the Owls a 1-0 lead. Immediately following Austin, Angiolini singled to left field scoring both Pearson and Iaquinto to bring the Owls lead to 3-0.
 
In the next inning, the Owls added another run when Pearson singled through the middle of the infield scoring Iaquinto to expand the Owls lead to 4-0.
 
The offense remained hot in the third inning, adding another two runs. The innings offense began with a walk by Christina DeNovellis, followed by a double by Cheyenne LaTouche, which gave the Owls two runners in scoring position. With two runners in scoring position, Young grounded out to the pitcher, which allowed DeNovellis to score bringing the lead to 5-0. The Owls added their final run for the inning when LaTouche scored on a passed ball extending the lead to 6-0.
 
In the 4th inning, the Owls remained hot when they added another. The inning began with a lead off single by Ingersoll. Pearson then walked to get the Owls runners on first and second. After a fielder's choice that allowed Ingersoll to advance to third, Angiolini singled to left field scoring Ingersoll to give the Owls a 7-0 lead.
 
In the 5th inning, the Owls added another three runs. The inning began when LaTouche walked. From there, pinch hitter Kayla Wakely singled to right center moving LaTouche to second. This was Wakely's fist hit of the season. Wakely then advanced into scoring position on a passed ball, setting up two runners in scoring position for Ingersoll. Ingersoll then grounded out to shortstop, allowing LaTouche to score giving the Owls an 8-0 lead. Following Ingersoll, Iaquinto tripled scoring Wakely bringing the lead to 9-0. The Owls final run of the game cam when Pearson singled scoring Iaquinto giving the Owls a 10-0 lead and the game.
 
Southern Connecticut is back in action on Saturday April 19th when they travel to Pleasantville, N.Y. to take on Pace University in a Northeast 10 conference doubleheader beginning at noon.
