NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A bases loaded walk in the seventh inning helped the No. 25 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University baseball team defeat Assumption College today, 7-6. The Owls jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning with a double from
Kyle Cummings (Hamden, Conn.), a error by the right fielder brought in the second run and
Michael Cleary (West Boylston, Mass.) added the other three runs with a three-run homer. The Greyhounds answered in the second with four runs to cut the lead to just one run. The Owls responded in the bottom half of the inning with a RBI single from Cummings again. The Greyhounds tied the game in the fifth with a 2-RBI double down the left field line. SCSU took the lead back in the seventh inning with a bases loaded walk by
Ryan Geffert (Plymouth, Pa.).
Cole Bryant (Newington, Conn.) started for SCSU and recorded a no decision. Bryant gave up six runs, on six hits and struck out four batters.
Daniel Murdoch (Newtown, Conn.) came in for relief in the seventh and threw two innings, without allowing a hit and struck out two batters. Murdoch was credited with the victory.
A.J. Turnier (Waterford, Conn.) came in for the ninth and picked up the save.
Cummings led the offense for Southern, going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Cleary tallied three RBI in his only hit.
Sam Greenberg (Guilford, Conn.) picked up two hits in the game. Geffert,
Nick Baviello (Orange, Conn.) and
Greg Pacelli (Hamden, Conn.) all collected hits in the victory.
The Owls move to 25-11 on the season and 12-6 in Northeast-10 Conference action. They will be back in tomorrow, when they host Le Moyne College for a doubleheader. Game one is scheduled to begin at noon.
