WALTHAM, Mass. - The No. 16 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut softball team won the Northeast-10 regular season title with its sweep of Bentley College 9-0, 14-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Owls improve to 36-6 (24-4 NE-10) with the result.
Southern tallied 13 hits in game one, ending the game in the sixth inning. Kate Hoffman (Orange, Conn..) put SCSU on the scoreboard first with a two run RBI double sending home teammates Kristin Whitley (North Andover, Mass.) and Nicole Buch (Darien, Conn.) Jessica Rosa (Wallingford, Conn.) connected on a RBI singled to bring home Hoffman on the next at bat. Southern added another two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Julie Muscarella (Suffield, Conn.) tallied a run off a wild pitch after hitting a triple. Southern lengthened its lead moments later when Whitley singled to centerfield putting the Owls ahead 5-0.
The top of the fifth continued to show Southern's dominance at bat putting up two more runs. Muscarella knocked in an two run single bringing home Stacy Pouliot (Mystic, Conn.) and Rosa.
SCSU closed out the game in the top of the sixth inning with Hoffman's homerun to left field widening the score to 8-0. Pouliot added an assurance run hitting an RBI single allowing Rosa to come home and seal the victory for the Owls in game one.
Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) picked up her 15th win of the season only allowing two hits and striking out 10 batters in 6.0 innings of work.
The Owls picked up where they left off in game two, registering five runs in the top of the first inning. Rosa started the drive with a single hit bringing home Buch. Pouliot followed suit with another single sending Hoffman across the plate to put Southern ahead 2-0. With two runners on, Muscarella blasted a three run homerun to extend the Owls lead to 5-0.
After conceding one run in the bottom of the first inning, Southern's offense exploded in the top of the second putting up nine runs. Buch's triple added another two runs to start the inning. Hoffman brought in another run with the next at bat connecting on a single hit bringing in Buch. Pouliot kept the drive alive with a double to right center sending home Hoffman. Rosa later scored on an RBI single to center by Muscarella. Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.) capped the inning off with a four run homerun to give the Owls a 14-1 lead and close out the win for SCSU.
Jayme Larson (Aurora, Colo.) picked up her 19th win of the season. The senior allowed one hit and struck out two batters.
Christina Boehn (Stamford, Conn.) came in and finished the game only allowing two hits and striking out one.
Southern is back in action Sunday, April 22 for a doubleheader at Stonehill. The games are scheduled to start at 10 a.m. and noon.
