EASTON, Mass. - The No. 16 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut softball team dropped its final regular season doubleheader against Stonehill College 3-2, 4-1 Sunday afternoon. The Owls wrapped up the regular season with an overall record of 36-8, (24-6 NE-10).
With the game scoreless in the top of the fourth inning, Stonehill struck first tallying two runs to put the Skyhawks up 2-0. SCSU would answer scoring two runs to even the score at two apiece in the top of the fifth. With
Julie Muscarella (Suffield, Conn.) reaching base early off a walk,
Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.) connected on a two run homerun to left center bringing home Muscarella.
The game stayed deadlocked at 2-2 until Stonehill notched a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, taking game one of the doubleheader.
Christina Boehn (Stamford, Conn.) pitched a solid 6.0 innings and only allowed 10 hits.
In game two action, The Owls trailed 4-0 after Stonehill tacked on four runs in the bottom of the third inning. SCSU tried to rally in the fifth inning. Kristie Vituli (Bronx, N.Y.) opened the inning with a reach to first on an error.
Allison Lehner (East Islip, N.Y.) followed suit with single down the left side advancing Vituli to second.
Sarah Koerner's (Coventry, R.I.) groundout advanced Vituli and Lehner on the next play. After a Bucko walk,
Nicole Buch (Darien, Conn.) reached first on a fielding error, sending home Vituli to put the Owls on the board.
SCSU's rally fell short after two strikeouts to end the inning. The unfortunate weather forced the game to end after the fifth inning granting Stonehill the victory for game two.
Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) only allowed five hits and struckout five batters in her 4.1 innings of work.
The Owls return to action next week to start the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament.
