SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The No. 21 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University baseball team split a doubleheader with AIC this afternoon, 9-2 and 2-1. In game one, the Yellow Jackets jumped out first with three runs in the second off starting pitcher
Steve Landell (Higganum, Conn.). AIC added two more in the seventh and four in the eighth to take a commanding 9-0 lead. The Owls managed to get two runs in the ninth with an RBI single from
Ryan Geffert (Plymouth, Pa.) and a RBI ground out by
T.J. Shea (Hamden, Conn.). SCSU could not hit the starting pitcher for AIC who went eight innings for the Yellow Jackets and only allowed the two runs on three hits.
Sam Greenberg (Guilford, Conn.),
Kyle Cummings (Hamden, Conn.) and Geffert were the only players to collect hits in game one. Geffert and Shea tallied the two RBI.
Landell started for SCSU in game one and allowed five runs, on eight hits and fanned nine batters through six innings of work.
Will Meade (Orange, Conn.) came if for Landell in the seventh and allowed three runs on four hits through one and 1/3 innings pitched.
Kevin Madera (Newington, Conn.) came in for relief and allowed an additional one run on two hits in 2/3 of an inning pitched.
In game two, the Owls jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second with a RBI sacrifice fly-out by
Sam Greenberg that scored
Nick Baviello (Orange, Conn.) from third. The Yellow Jackets even the score in the fifth to make it a 1-1 game. SCSU regained the lead in the top of the seventh with an RBI sacrifice fly-out by
Greg Pacelli (Hamden, Conn.). The Owls then added some insurance in the ninth with three runs thanks to
Bryan Dorsey (Cheshire, Conn.) scoring on a passed ball, a RBI sacrifice fly by
Peter Testa (Orange, Conn.) and an error by the shortstop that allowed Baviello to score from third.
Cole Bryant (Newington, Conn.) started for Southern in game two. Bryant allowed one run, on seven hits and struck out nine batters through 7 and 1/3 innings pitched. Bryant was credited with the victory.
Pat Egan (Aberdeen, N.J.) came in, in the eight and picked up the save. Egan threw a hitless inning and 1/3 and struck out four batters. Offensively, Dorsey, and
Michael Cleary (West Boylston, Mass.) were the only players to collect hits, and both tallied two hits apiece. Dorsey also scored twice and Cleary came around to score once.
SCSU improved to 28-14 on the year, and 9-6 Northeast-10 Conference play. The Owls will be back in action tomorrow when they play a single game against AIC.
