No. 18 Softball Splits Doubleheader With Southern New Hampshire

MANCHESTER, N.H. – No. 18 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut's rally fell short in game two as the Owls split their doubleheader against Southern New Hampshire 1-0, 5-6 Friday evening. Southern improved to 24-4, 9-2 (NE-10).
 
Southern's Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.) gave the Owl's the only run of the game smacking a homerun into left center in the top of the third inning. Bucko's homerun was the only run needed to give Southern the victoy.
 
Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) was credited the win. She allowed only six hits and fanned five batters to improve to 11-1 on the season.
 
In game two action, Bucko smacked her second homerun of the day to left field in the top of the first inning giving the Owls a 1-0 lead. Southern New Hampshire quickly answered with two runs of their own bringing the score to 2-1 after the first inning. With SNHU adding a run in the third, Southern responded in the top of the fifth inning when Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.) hit a homerun to left field sending home Nicole Buch (Darien, Conn.) 
 
The Pennmen continued to battle adding two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Southern New Hampshire a 6-3 lead. Southern continued to answer with Bucko reaching second base on an infielding error. Buch reached first base of a walk. With Bucko and Buch on base, Downs added two the scoring threat with a reach to first base loading the bases for the Owls. Kate Hoffman (Orange, Conn.) grounded to second base allowing Bucko to come home. Buch followed Bucko home on a passed ball narrowing the gap to 6-5.
 
The Owls rally fell short, dropping the decision to SNHU.
 
Southern returns to action Saturday, April 7 for a doubleheader at against St. Anselms.
