No. 18 Softball Sweeps St. Rose 8-3, 11-0

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The No. 18 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut softball team used its high powered offense to sweep the College of St. Rose 8-4, 11-0 Monday afternoon at Pelz Field. The Owls improved their overall record to 27-5, 15-3 (NE-10).

Southern struck first in game one of the doubleheader. Shawna Mallory (Simi Valley, Calif.) started the bottom of the inning reaching second base after a wild pitch and a walk. Allison Lehner (East Islip, N.Y) followed up with an RBI a double to left field sending in Mallory to give the Owls a 1-0 lead. The Owls extended their lead next at bat with Alyssa Pagano (Monroe, Conn.) smashing a two run homerun putting Southern ahead 3-0 going in to the third inning.

After conceding one run in the top of the third, Southern went back to work. Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.) and Kristin Whitley (North Andover, Mass.) led the drive with a double steal. The double steal set up Stacy Pouliot (Mystic, Conn.) for a double into deep left field sending in Downs and Whitley. Mallory added another RBI single to put Southern ahead 6-1 after the third inning.

Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.) and Nicole Buch (Darien, Conn.) drove in singles in the bottom of the fourth inning setting up Whitley to bring home Bucko after a ground out to second base. Whitley was credited the RBI.

Southern added another run in the bottom of the sixth off of Buch's RBI double to lengthen the gap and secure the win with a final score of 8-3.

Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) was credited the win only allowing four hits and striking out four batters. She improved her overall record to 12-2 on the year.

The Owls came out swinging in game two of the doubleheader, notching five runs in the first inning. Whitley started the first scoring drive with a reach on an error allowing Bucko to score first for Southern. With Whitley and teammate Buch in scoring position, Downs blasted a three run homerun to clear the bags and put SCSU up 4-0. Mallory followed up with an RBI double to add another run widening the gap to 5-0 after the first.

Southern picked up where they left off in the second inning adding four more runs. Hoffman connected on an RBI double to add to SCSU's lead. Kristie Vituli (Bronx, N.Y.) added her own double to centerfield allowing Hoffman and Downs to cross the plate. Mallory capped the third double of the inning to give Southern its fourth run stretching the lead to 9-0 after the second inning.

The Owls registered another run in the bottom of the third off of Hoffman's reach from an error at seond base sending Buch home for the 10-0 lead.

Sambina Farese (Watertown, Conn.) added an assurance run in the sixth off an error from St. Rose.

SCSU picked up the win in the top of the fifth inning on a mercy rule.

Jayme Larson (Aurora, Colo.) picked up her 13th win of the season, improving to 13-2 overall. The senior standout only allowed two hits with four strikeouts.

Southern returns to action Wednesday, April 11 for a doubleheader match-up at Assumption College.
