NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 30 nationally ranked Baseball made quick work of Adelphi, defeating the Panthers, 8-3. The Panthers jumped out first with a solo homerun from the first basemen in the fourth inning. The Owls answered right back in the bottom half of the inning with two runs.
Michael Cleary (West Boylston, Mass.) drove in the first run with an RBI double down the right field line and
Nick Baviello (Orange, Conn.) drove in the second with an RBI ground out to second. Adelphi tied the game up in the top of the sixth with a bases loaded single to center field. SCSU broke the game open in the bottom of the frame with three runs. Southern Connecticut got one on a bases loaded single by Baviello, followed by a two-RBI single through the left side by
Peter Testa (Orange, Conn.). The Owls added three in the seventh to extend the lead to 6-2. SCSU added two when Cleary bunted and the third basemen threw the ball away that allowed the two to score. The third was a sacrifice fly-out by Baviello. SCSU cruised in next two innings to secure the victory.
Daniel Murdoch (Newtown, Conn.) started for the Owls and was tabbed with a no decision. Murdoch allowed two runs, on two hits and fanned four batters through five innings of work.
Kevin Madera (Newington, Conn.) came in for relief of Murdoch in the sixth and didn't record an out. Madera hit a batter and walked the other batter he faced.
Steve Landell (Higganum, Conn.) came in after Madera and picked up the victory for SCSU. Landell allowed only one hit and fanned four in three innings pitched.
Pat Egan (Aberdeen, N.J.) came on in the ninth and allowed one run, on two hits.
Michael Cleary led the offense for SCSU going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored. Baviello had one hit and a team-high three RBI.
Bryan Dorsey (Cheshire, Conn.) tallied two hits and two runs scored.
Peter Testa tallied two RBI on his only hit in the game.
The Owls move to 30-14 on the season and 11-6 in Northeast-10 Conference action. They will be back in action Saturday, when they travel to play a doubleheader at Pace University. Game one is scheduled to start at noon.
