Indiana (Pa.) Defeats SCSU In 2012 Football Opener

The Owls dropped their 2012 season opener on Saturday.

INDIANA, Pa. – The Southern Connecticut State University football team was defeated by Indiana (Pa.) in the season opener for both teams on Saturday, 33-6.

Jacob Jablonski (Gales Ferry, Conn.) completed 9-of-12 passes for 62 yards and a touchdown and also rushed five times for 20 yards in the contest. Bobby Lippincott (Barkhamsted, Conn.) was 5-of-10 for 83 yards.

Carlton Staggars (West Haven, Conn.) had three catches, including a touchdown, for 46 yards, to pace the wideouts. Jerome Cunningham (Waterbury, Conn.) also had three catches for 19 yards. Jayson Holt (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) added two catches for 30 yards, while Willie Epps (Norwalk, Conn.) had one catch for 36 yards.

The Owls' defense forced a fumble on their own 4 early in the first quarter.  However, the Crimson Hawks forced a 3-and-out and started on the SCSU 28. A six-play drive followed to put the hosts ahead 7-0.

IUP would make it 14-0 with another touchdown run midway through the second quarter. The Owls answered with an eight-play, 78 yard drive. Jablonski capped the drive with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Staggars. The PAT was blocked though to keep the score at 14-6.



The hosts added three more points on a successful field goal on the final play of the first half.

IUP added two more touchdowns in the second half, as well as a fourth quarter safety, to make it a 33-6 final.

Southern Connecticut is back in action next Saturday for the Northeast-10 Conference opener at Stonehill.
