Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – The Southern Connecticut State University football team scored a touchdown on its opening drive, but host Assumption College recorded the final 17 points of the game to claim a 17-7 win over the Owls on Saturday night in a Northeast-10 Conference contest.
The Owls are now 3-4, 3-3 in Northeast-10 play. Assumption moves to 4-3, 4-2 in league action.
John Moscatel (Lexington, Mass.) finished with 26 carries for 80 yards for the Owls. Quarterback
Brandon Basil (Northford, Conn.) completed 10-of-31 passes for 62 yards.
Sebron Woodley (Linden, N.J.) led the defense with nine tackles.
The Owls took the opening kickoff and assembled a 19-play, 75-yard drive. Facing a fourth-and-goal from the Assumption 1,
Vaughn Magee (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) broke through the right side of the line for a touchdown.
Devin Silverman (Berlin, Conn.) added the PAT for a 7-0 lead.
Southern's defense notched a pair of interceptions – one each from
Brian Wilcox (Jericho, Vt.) and
Mustaqiim Plair (New Haven, Conn.) – in the opening half and held the Greyhounds to just three points. Tad Beuchert connected on a 39-yard field goal with 54 seconds remaining in the frame to cut the Owls' lead to 7-3 at the intermission.
Assumption took the lead just over three minutes into the second half. Following an Owls' interception, the Greyhounds converted a 17-yard touchdown pass from Bobby Jordan to Eddy Frazier. The successful PAT from Beuchert extended the lead to 10-7.
Matt Heriveaux added a two-yard touchdown run that ended a 13-play, 69-yard drive in the closing minutes to make it a 17-7 final.
Southern Connecticut returns to action on Friday night for a home game against New Haven at 7 p.m.
