CLERMONT, Fla. - The Southern Connecticut State University softball team was edged by West Chester (Pa.), 3-2, in its first game of the day on Sunday in Clermont, Fla. The Owls were also scheduled to play Mercy in the nightcap, but that contest was cancelled.
The Owls (3-5) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning after an RBI single from
Sarah Koerner (Coventry, R.I.).
West Chester (11-5) then scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run home run from Erin Quense and then Jessica Noris reached on an error, scoring a run.
SCSU made it 3-2 in the top of the seventh after an RBI single from
Julie Muscarella (Suffield, Conn.), scoring
Nicole Buch (Darien, Conn.), who led off with a walk.
The Owls grounded into a fielder's choice to end the game with one runner on first base.
Kate Hoffman (Orange, Conn.) also went 2-for-3 for SCSU.
Jessica Van Alphen (Hudson, N.Y.) took the loss (1-2) for SCSU while going 3.2 innings allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits with five walks and three strikeouts.
